In my childhood, my friends and I would often build forts. We would make a day of it.

We would pack our lunches, gather our supplies and journey to a local park with a large hill. Once there, we would construct our fort and then sit, eat our lunches and wait. I am not sure we ever gave a thought to who the enemy was or the reality that our fortress really did not offer much protection.

Unfortunately, we still construct fortresses as adults. It might be our position, or the beautiful buildings we construct. It could even be our 401-K or our strong friendships.

Psalm 46:1 reminds us that “God is our refuge and strength.” Everything in our lives and ministry must be built and centered around Him.

As ministry professionals, we must be constantly in God’s Word, growing in our faith and relationship with Him. All earthly fortresses will sooner or later pass away. God’s love for us is eternal. Jesus will always be our only true fortress.
