It seems that if your SSN and other PII (Personally Identifiable Information) have not yet been stolen and published online, it is just a matter of time before they have. Here is a guide that might assist in securing your credit so that others cannot use your data to open a credit or bank account in your name.

If you freeze your credit, nobody will be able to open an account in your name until it is unfrozen. This will not impact your current accounts, but you must thaw or unfreeze your credit before opening a new account. So, for example, if you are going to purchase a car, you can ask the car dealership which credit bureau they will use. You can then log in to that credit bureau, thaw your account, secure your car loan, log back in, and freeze it again.

Here is the list of the normal credit bureaus where you should freeze your credit. It is also a good idea to log in and double-check your accounts once a year or so, especially after a cyber-security event. (Note: these are all no-cost options, but you will be offered services that cost money. You do not have to pay for any upgrades to complete any of these tasks.)Equifax

And also a minor 4th bureau that would be good to freeze at:

Also, if you are ever a victim of identity theft, one of the steps you have to take is to report the theft to the three credit bureaus. Thankfully, by law, if one of the three gets the report, they must share that information with the other two, so you only have to make a single report to the three. That said, to make the report with Experian, even if you have a credit monitoring account with them, you have to print a form and mail it to them by USPS. Equifax has an easy web form, so report there instead and let them file the reports with Experian and TransUnion.

Finally, you need to freeze your credit with ChexSystems to prevent anyone from opening a bank account in your name.

A good article on why it is foolish to use our SSNs as passwords and a more prudent alternative. (Please consider sharing with your elected representatives.)

Fingerprints and SSN numbers are usernames, not passwords
